Brittle Bones

Osteoporosis is a condition that affects bone health. It occurs when the body loses too much bone tissue or fails to produce enough new ones, resulting in a deterioration of bones becoming weak and brittle. This can lead to an increased risk of fractures, particularly in the hip, spine, and wrist. Even after breaking a bone, 80% of people at high risk for osteoporosis go undiagnosed and untreated.

The statistics in Bulgaria are troubling - approximately one woman out of three & one man out of five over the age of 50, suffer from this condition. Osteoporosis is more common in women than men, especially after menopause due to decreased estrogen levels, which play a critical role in maintaining bone density. Every hour in Bulgaria at least 6 fractures are registered as a result of osteoporosis. The risk of breaking a hip in women is greater than the risk of developing breast, endometrial and ovarian cancer combined. Therefore we find it important to speak about the topic and draw attention to this health issue through the form of art.

We advise you to talk to an endocrinologist or rheumatologist about your bone health. Measuring bone density with an osteodensitometer (DXA) is the only way to detect osteoporosis.

On the invitation of Amgen, Visionary joined the campaign by creating a painting on the ground in the public space to raise awareness about the disease in a more accessible and easy to grasp context.
