Stefan Doitschinoff in Bulgaria for the first time at the invitation of Purgatory
Stephan Doitschinoff is a Brazilian contemporary visual artist who works in the fields of painting, installation and performance, winner of the “Most Promising Artist” award from APCA (Association of Art Critics of São Paulo). He has had exhibitions in institutional spaces such as the Irish Museum of Modern Art/Ireland, the Museum of Contemporary Art in San Diego/USA, the Cartier Foundation/France, etc.
At the invitation of Purgatory, the artist with Bulgarian roots will visit Sofia for the first time and present his workshop on the topic "Personal Symbolism and Artistic Process", in which event we are honored to be a partner.
Who is Stefan Doitschinoff?
Stephan Doitschinoff’s work carries both encrypted and symbolic messages. This at first glance seems like a visual narrative, saturated with religious or dogmatic references, but a deeper reading reveals a process of rethinking the structure and giving it new meaning.
His works intertwine Afro-Brazilian rituals, baroque elements, pagan symbols and animism, which he explored in depth during his three-year project in a small Brazilian village in the state of Bahia, documented in the film “Temporal” (2009).
“One of the important things I learned while painting murals in São Paulo in the early 2000s was the value of communicating not only with the audience in museums and galleries, but also with people who would not normally enter these spaces.
Regarding the relationship between the street and the museum, I have never felt that one offers more freedom than the other. Throughout my career, I have been lucky enough to work with institutions and curators who have given me complete creative freedom. The idea that the street is inherently free, while museums are inherently restrictive, has never reflected my experience.

The lecture is intended not only for visual artists, but also for anyone interested in creativity, artistic processes, visual arts, painting, performance, Latin America, symbolism, mysticism and the various themes that permeate Stefan Doychinov's artistic trajectory and research.
August 1-2, 10:30 AM - 2:30 PM – creative workshop (50 euros*)
This second session is intended primarily for visual artists and people interested in deepening their own creativity and individual visual language.
The main goal of the workshop is to help artists find their own, personal paths in their practice, developing the unique characteristics of their production, while strengthening their identity, self-perception and poetic identity.

Upon expressed interest, the workshop has the potential to develop into a "Portfolio Review and Studio Visits" with selected participants.
